Since January 2010, Weitz has been serving as Broward County’s Representative, overseeing both the construction of the New Family Courthouse and the Convention Center expansion. From schematic design all the way through project completion, Weitz has represented the County on these large and complex projects.
With its design and County Business Enterprise (CBE) partners, The Weitz Company served as owner’s representative to the Broward County Purchasing Division for the construction of a new, 21-story family and civil courthouse. Features of the 693,000 square foot building included a raised civil. The second floor included connector walkways for prisoners, judges, and other people moving between the courthouse and parking garage. The building features high-quality, high-efficiency mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems; multiple elevators; electronic court features with wi-fi throughout; and digitized Clerk of the Court Facilities. Also included with the state-of-the-art, LEED Gold certified building is a six-level, 500-stall parking structure adjacent to the courthouse tower.
Weitz is working with five other key project stakeholders as the owner’s representative to deliver the design-build Broward County Convention Center expansion project, coming in at an estimated cost of $900 million. When complete in the fall of 2023, the expanded convention center will boast more than 1.2 million square feet of event space (including 350,000 square feet of contiguous exhibition space), a new 65,000-square-foot waterfront ballroom, the latest in new technology, new dining concepts, enhanced water taxi access and an iconic waterfront plaza with public access. The hotel will also add more than 73,000 square feet of meeting space, an 11,000-square-foot spa and fitness center and expanded entertainment, retail, and dining spaces for visitors and residents to enjoy. The expansion will also include an 800-room, four-diamond Omni Hotel on the property.
