Orascom Construction Limited (NASDAQ Dubai: OC; EGX: ORAS) announces that it has achieved power-to-grid for the four combined cycle modules at Burullus Power Plant in Egypt, marking a major milestone at one of the largest gas-fired combined cycle power plants in the world. With the start of construction in October 2015, this achievement also highlights the Group’s success in setting a new global benchmark for the fast-track execution of power projects.
Constructed in partnership with Siemens, Burullus Power Plant is the first of the three mega power plants in Egypt—each with a capacity of 4800 MW—to achieve power-to-grid for all modules despite the latest start and the most challenging site conditions. These challenges were not limited to the project’s remote location and severe weather conditions, as the nature of the site required additional complex geotechnical engineering with significantly greater soil improvement and piling work than expected, in addition to immense marine and water intake structures in the open sea.
Scope of Orascom Construction (OC) included carrying out all engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work for the entire project. Testing, pre-commissioning and commissioning were also included in the scope of OC jointly with OEM who supplied the Gas Turbines, HRSG and Steam Turbines.
Furthermore, the Group was able to achieve in excess of 44 million man-hours without Lost Time Injury (LTI) at Burullus Power Plant, emphasizing the Orascom Construction’s adoption of the highest quality, safety, health and environmental standards.
Orascom Construction is currently building power plants in Egypt with a total capacity of 11,250 MW, positioning the Group for new power projects in Egypt and the region. An Orascom-Siemens consortium is also building the New Capital Power Plant, one of the other two mega power projects.
