PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION OF WATER AND ELECTRICITY MINISTRY OF ENERGY IN BURUNDI (REGIDESO)
Burundi, East Africa
EPC Contractor
The Jiji & Mulembwe Hydropower Project is one of East Africa’s most significant renewable energy developments, comprising the Jiji Hydropower Plant, completed in June 2025, and the Mulembwe Hydropower Plant, which was connected to Burundi’s national grid in September 2025 and inaugurated in June 2026.
Delivered by Orascom Construction, the two facilities increase Burundi’s power generation capacity by more than 50%, supporting improved access to reliable electricity and contributing to the country’s long-term economic and social development.
The EPC scope included extensive civil and electromechanical works, encompassing dam and intake structures, tunnels, pipelines, and powerhouses equipped with turbines, generators, transformers, switchgear, and associated facilities. The project was executed in remote and challenging terrain, demonstrating Orascom Construction’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects in demanding environments.
The project further strengthens Orascom Construction’s power portfolio and builds on its track record of delivering major hydropower projects, including the New Assiut Barrage and Hydropower Plant and the Naga Hammadi Hydropower Plant in Egypt.
